As the debate went on, the man whom I was talking with (one of my Dad's friends, I was helping him work on his fancy new MacBook Pro...he seemed like a pretty good guy) stated (not exactly, but pretty close) Canadians are no different than Americans, and it's only a matter of time before the border dividing our 2 nations is all but obsolete....we will be known as "North Saskatchewan", one of the many new states in the Upper American region that is now Canada. Well, I took a little offense to this. I argued that Canadians are totally different than Americans but at the time, my mind drew a blank....How are we different?, I asked myself.

Well, it's taken me a bit longer to think (only because I can be rather slow at times), but I know for a fact that we Canadians have a culture and way of life that is unique in the World, and it is something that I am very happy to be a part of and I'm very proud to be Canadian.

So, what can we consider part of our culture: Canada, by and large, is a peacekeeping nation. Although certain events, perpetrated by the moron heading the nation directly South of us and those on the other side of the World who only serve hate, has made our role as peacekeeper fuzzy, as the violence has escalated in this "War on Terror" (whatever that really means...I'd also lump the USA under Bush's leadership living in terror as well...and yes, I know there are differences so don't even bother eh!) and we were forced to take more of an active role in the offensive. I still feel that we are by and large, a peacekeeping nation. Nothing filled me with more pride when Jean Chretien told the USA way back when: "No, we are not going into Iraq"

Other things that make up our culture: The maple leaf, the beaver...heck, NATURE..out nation is simply beautiful (that what I have seen (west coast to TO))!!....hockey, Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall with temps ranging -40 deg cel to +40 deg cel. The CFL (go Riders of course), music: Canadian music simply is the best music out there with The Diggers, The Hip, The Rheos, Neil Young, Matt Mays, Blue Rodeo, Sam Roberts, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, The BNL, The New Pornos, Salteens, the list could go on and on, Multiculuralism, Equality, and of course, Freedom...and the list could go on and on (This is only a brief glimpse here...I don't want to babble forever ;-)

So, what I guess I'm saying is that YES, we Canadians do have a culture all our own...and YES, I am damn proud to be a part of this great nation I call my home!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Well, Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadians out there! This thanksgiving has been a little bit more hectic for me because of my insane work load this term but....turkey, stuffing, cabbage rolls, and yes....pie...mmmmmm

Over the years my family and I have enjoyed such a turkey feast. It was only until a few years ago that I found out that for years, we had been buying "utility grade" turkey. Here is kind of how it all played out:

Not knowing what this meant, I asked my mom: "What is a utility turkey?"

So, her response: "Well, you know....it's a ...you know....a turkey....that ...you know...... may be missin a few parts eh!"

My response: "pardon me now!?!"

Her response: "Ya, you know...its-a-missin-a-few-a-parts-a....you know ....Turkey minus beak....Turkey minus wing"

My response: "oh my god!

Anyway, long story short...I personally vowed (along with my sisters) to NEVER have utility bird ever again! So, enter thanksgiving 2006. My aunt gave us a turkey bird a while back and it has been in the freezer for sometime so my mom thought we would finally cook'er up this thanksgiving. I had thought that this bird was "grade A" However, upon waking up this morning and getting ready to do some homework due for the next day (curses 831...), I ventured to see how things in the kitchen were going. So, what did I encounter...

There was my mom...getting the turkey bird ready for cookin. Here's how it played out:

I ask: "So, how are things going?"

Her response: "insert giggle...Well, ya, know....how to perform some "skin grafting" this morning!"

My response: "Umm...now, now what was that...ah.....come again now?"

Her response: "insert hysterical giggle....Well, yes....some skin grafting needed-a-to-be-a-done ...Well, you see...a utility bird ye be... and well.....you see, (insert more giggles) I had to "graft" some turkey neck skin and "re-graft" it to the turkey breast....(insert hysterical laughter)

My response: "oh my goodness........."

So, for this year...a utility bird we have and with that, I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!! ..and for Christmas this year, I personally will go out and buy the turkey bird!!!!!!!

Well...the blog is here to stay .....for now....

Well....what a crazy start to a most crazy semester!!!!!! This term I'll be teaching 2 CS labs at the U of R, taking 2 classes at the U, and working part time on the one day a week I have some "free" time....sigh

Well....that's the short of it all for now. I've also decided to keep this blog going for a while. I like blogger and it will take me some time to learn the ins-and-outs of maintaining some web space. So, with that...this blog will be kept for the time being. I'm going to use the server space purchased to make my own personal website (of my music and other stuff). That should be fun and not too time consuming in the "short run"...of this term.

Once this term is done....and if I'm still somewhat sane (I'm sooooo horribly busy this term....aye)....I'll re-think putting my blog on the webspace. We'll see how everything goes...

Well, just a short note for now! Good luck Krista in your interview!....very exciting!

....end communication....
~T

PS: Here's a pic with Joey, Harry and I......Harry sure seemed to like my new computer!!!

New site coming soon

Hello all -- this is just a quick heads up! Well, to solidify my argument, in a recent blog posted by my sister I found out that the new season of Survivor is going to pin race against race....that's right...you read that right!?! (if you didn't already know).

What the hell is this all about. I find this concept of a TV show quite insulting and take great offence to it. To make matters worse, when stating my opinion on the matter I've taken a lot of flak from people who claim to not see what the big deal is. "This is going to be great TV", someone told me....whatever, if you really think so, and, "Don't the Olympics pin country against country?"...this was another of the arguments that I have heard...well, folks...it's not the same, beside the fact that Canada is made up of many races whom all get together to compete and represent our great nation.

Anyway, that's beside the point. In a day in age when racism is still a prominent fact of life, albeit we have gotten better...or have we?, why do we still have this kind of ridiculous-ness in our TV shows. The only answer I can find is that we have gotten so stupid as a society that we find this kind of crap pleasureable.

If I have to watch reality TV, I'd much rather prefer to see different kinds of people, race, ethnicity, all working together for a greater good....like the Olympics ;-) This could just be my socialist, pacifist ways but I'd like to think that we as a society have gotten better. After seeing this new Survivor twist, I really don't think we have as this concept serves to only feed on peoples' anger and thirst to offend; the kind of crap like when bad things happen to good people...Spike TVs motto.

My sister tells me that why should this matter...one show is not going to have an effect on how we live our everyday lives. Perhaps she is right but I still think this is very-VERY wrong.

The sad fact of the matter is, is that it has won....since I will probably watch to see what it's all about.....Kudos...jerk-assess...and by jerk-assess I mean TV execs and the millions of people who will tune in to watch, and I have to include myself in this too, and whomever else you want to throw in....it's depressing indeed.....

~T

The Beginning of the End...

It all started back...well, quite a while ago when the first season of Survivor hit the TV. People in droves watched in awe..but deep down, I knew it was the beginning of the end of good, quality TV as we knew it. Soon, reality TV CRAP started to fill the tube on a daily night...heck, we even have something called "American Inventor", "America's Got Talent"....well, no...guess what folks.....America..and the rest of the world for that matter...has got SHIT (pardon the language folks...but it simply could not be avoided).

It began with this most wonderful show, Farscape. It took me a while to fully comprehend what a most excellent show Farscape is/was. The writing of the show was excellent. The cast was super. It reminded me of the original Star Wars movies (the original 3, non-fudged up ones)...the cast just meshed. It was good TV. I still have the entire 4 seasons taped on VHS and still watch it from time to time..it's on rotation during my morning treadmill (currently in rotation is Stargate....more on this later....). Anyway, the show was cancelled, people protested, won a small battle when it came back for a miniTV series in the PKW, and then vanished out of sight.

Meanwhile, reality TV grew ever more popular. This was seen as the popularity grew for such ridiculous shows as Fear Factor, Big Brother, American Idol (which has simply ruined the music industry as we know it), Rock Star..or The One..whatever the hell it's called, Survivor, etc...etc...etc..

To make matters worse (especially for us SCI-FI folk) I recently caught an RSS feed from Gateworld (tonight, just before this long rant/post that I'm writing), FYI, Gateworld is the total resource for information relating to anything Stargate, that related some disturbing news.

Now, before I go any further, I'm sure some of you who may be reading this post may say..well, these are just ridiculous SCI-FI shows and man, is this guy a huge nerd. Well, whatever. Good TV, no matter what genre it is, is good TV..whether it's Stargate, Farscape, CSI, Numbers, Law and Order, Sopranos, Lost, etc...and SCI-FI is simply good TV. It enhances our imagination (did anyone see how William Shatner invented everything??...ha)...but, it's true that SCI-FI let's us visualize the possibilities of the future....don't laugh....or laugh...whatever makes you feel good ;-) Reality TV is not good TV..it may have its moments, like The Amazing Race (which is more like a sport really...), but by in large, reality TV SUCKS!!

Anyway, back to Stargate. The SCI-FI channel has recently announced that it will not add an 11th season to this most excellent show. I am in shock (my fellow nerds...unite). I have been a Stargate fan for quite some time...owning all of the DVDs (I actually bought them yes....). It was one of those shows where I could watch and forget about everything....and now, it too, like many other great TV shows with actual acting in it and not some hick who wants his or her 15 minutes, will be gone.

With the end of Stargate, I can take some solace that it was the longest running SCI-FI channel show ever...and I will still have all of the DVDs to watch whenever I want to get away from all of the other fluff that's on the tube now. The producers of Stargate have said that the show may go on...and I really hope it does. However, these attempts are often futile...but, I'll keep my fingers crossed...

So, reality TV...perhaps you are winning the battle...but I'm hoping we can all get our heads out of our assess, even for just one minute, and start to realize the huge waste of time reality TV really is and how it takes away from our culture, the talented actors, and superb TV shows that are vanishing into oblivion to make way for the 15 minute loser. It is truly depressing.....

Take care
~T

Toronto (part 2)

Well, it's now been a week since we came back from T.O. I must say, I sort of miss it (although I have been spending almost every waking hour of everyday since I've been back working on our (Dominik's, Daryl's, and my) publication for the First International Conference on Hybrid Information Technology...but it's done and submitted. Yay!)

The second week turned out to be just as good as the first. We went downtown to do a little more shopping (and yes, to re-visit the nerd store to buy more nerd things...ha), saw the hockey hall of fame, went to see the Lord of The Rings (LOTR) onstage production, went to Niagara Falls (very cool!), helped my sister and her hubby Neil get into their new pad, and had my sister's 30th b-day.

The highlight of the trip for me was the LOTR onstage production (and Spamalot). Over the course of my guitar playing days (almost 20 years now) I have played in many musical productions, including The Little Shop of Horrors and Godspell. When I was younger my Dad took us to see Tommy, the Musical at the Centre of the Arts but perhaps I was too young to appreciate what it was (or perhaps it just sucked?? ;-) Both Spamalot and the LOTR were AWESOME! Especially LOTR.

From the beginning, where Hobbits were running around the audience trying to catch fireflies (they actually had little flying stringed lights that looked like fireflies flying around the theatre...it was very cool), I knew I would have a good time. The visual production was simply excellent, and although it did venture from the story and was a tad bit rushed (although many reviewers said it was too long, running for approx. 3-1/2 hrs), I could've easily stuck around to see more

Just Look at the Ents in the pic I have posted...spectacular is all that comes to mind. But, you really have to see it to appreciate it! I found it quite interesting that it didn't get very good reviews from the theatre going crowd. It was very enjoyable; I would even go see it again (Spamalot too..but more so the LOTR). I would consider buying the "soundtrack" but it isn't available (hopefully it will be).

Things like this made Toronto so enjoyable. In Regina, there isn't much opportunity to see spectacles like this. Even though I still love it here, like I said before, I would be ok with having to move out east. I do like the quite life though, and T.O most definitely is not that!

Niagara Falls was also quite cool, we took the mist boat tour (see the pic with my sister Krista and little bro Joey, ...Uncle Bill is hiding out of sight of course....he also opted to not wear his "blue suit"...he got soaked!....but wearing those was like being slowly cooked in an oven...aye) ...anyway, the boat to us right up to the falls. They were massive!...and it was pretty cool. However, the town of Niagara Falls was quite dumpy. You'd think given the tourist trap that it is, that they would fix it up. We even saw some mother letting her son pee against the wall in public...all I could think of was "what the he...."

One thing we missed that I would've loved to see was Van Morrison at the ACC....man, that would've been sweet but, there just wasn't enough time. The week ended with my sister's 30th b-day celebration...man, she is ooolllllldddddd...nah, just kidding...30 is coming up for me so...better shut it!

Well, next week I'm hoping to get back into the grove of things, start jamming with Jason again...get ready for another open jam night (I think we may try within the next couple weeks so), work on some part-time web development work that I'm doing (exciting stuff!!), and yes prepare for next term and relax before the craziness of school begins....man, I hate September...all the newbees...oh well.... ;-)

Take care
~T

Toronto (so far)

Well, it's now been a week in the "big city" of our great nation and I must say, it was not what I was expecting at all. The drive from Regina to T.O. was quite nice. Highlights: Thunder Bay and Lake Superior (Agawa Bay to be exact) were very nice...also, just outside of Sudbury on the way to T.O. was very nice. When arriving in T.O. I was expecting grey, polluted skies and greasy-ness everywhere but no. Although the smog was visible and some areas were quite "greasy" (downtown T.O.) overall, the good things of this province/city/area definitely outweigh the bad.

We've kind of been going non-stop since we arrived: touring the downtown area (CN Tower, Skydome, Hard Rock Cafe, etc.), Spamalot, Warplane Heritage Museum, and downtown some more (my sister's new pad). Overall, although there is sooooo many people (I live in Saskatchewan.....it now seems like the middle of the boonies...but I still very much love my home province!) and this heat (reached 48 degrees with the humidex one day when we were touring downtown....yuk!!), I think if I end up having to move here after I'm done my tour of duty at the U of R, I would be ok with it.

Toronto is a nice place. There is just so much that you can do, see, etc. The downtown area is very youthful and vibrant (does this make sense??). It just feels like there is a lot of energy....young people, aged 20-35, flood the downtown streets which is something I'm simply not accustomed to seeing. In Regina, the "elderly" (tehe) rule the province, but Toronto seems very much the opposite. I really like this feeling! Although, the downtown area was a little bit "greasy" (perhaps a lot! ;-), having that many people confined in such a small space, it is to be expected, the downtown area was excellent...so much to do and such a wealth of culture! ....and yes, some weirdos to boot! (tehe) ...makes life interesting!

The grey skies I was expecting to see everyday are there but, I'm sitting in Bradford right now, a little ways away from the core of T.O., and the skies are as blue as back home...even in the greater T.O. downtown area, I saw some blue skies. Again, this place was not what I was expecting at all!

One issue I have: Traffic...oh-my goodness I've never felt so anxious in a car in my life....If I end up here, I'll most certainly find the closest place to live to my work and sub-it! Driving is simply not recommended. For example, today we planned a quick tour of my sisters new pad downtown and it took the whole day to get down there and back....yuk!...double-yuk!!! .....triple-yuk!!!

Things we've done so far:

Downtown T.O. was pretty good: the CN tower was excellent (too many bloody people though) and the downtown shops were awesome.

We happened upon a nerd shop that had many very cool things in it, among a 4ft Gollum statue...tehe...imagine that in your front yard...tehe!!

The highlight so far has been Spamalot, the Monty Python Musical Comedy based on the Quest for the Holy Grail. It was most spectacular!! I even purchased some coconuts!!! (haha). The Hard Rock Cafe was also cool! I actually strummed the strings of Jimi Hendrix's and Eric Clapton's guitars that they had hanging up! (pictured below, Me and Eric's guitar)

They also had Neil Young's, Steve Earle's, BB's guitars up for display...and a lot more!! It was simply a big highlight for me!! We also went to the Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton...it was also kind of cool!

So, we still have a lot of things planned for next week...Niagara Falls, some more downtown shopping, Hockey Hall of Fame, the Museum (Mummy exhibit!!), The Lord of The Ring's theatre production (excellent!...I'm soo looking forward to this!)...and possibly Van Morrison at the ACC, may not be enough time for Van though :-(

So far it's been fun! That's all for now
Over-and-out
~T

PS: Sammy, you'll like this one. We think we found out what Johnny was doing in the states....working for the billboard companies (note the website!!!...tehe):

McNally's Open Jam Night

Well, it's officially over....I'm home doing laundry and packing for my big trip....why did I wait till the last minute?? ....sigh

So, how did the jam go? Well, I think we did ok. It's been almost 10 years since I last played in public and with Jason. Overall, I think we did well. The first few bands were quite exceptional. That is when the nerves started kicking in and the beer started "going down" ;-) We played 4 songs: Taylor by Jack Johnson, Shine up my Boots and Unititled Waltz by Corb Lund, and What Do You See by the Diggers. I found the sound to be a little muffled...but Jason who could hear better (maybe his monitor was a bit better tuned than mine??....and Mel (Jason's wife in the audience) said everything sounded good...could've been the beer muffling the sound a bit too?? ;-) Next time, I think I'll have only 1 beer before we go up....it's been so long since I've actually drank any type of alcohol. My mindset: why consume all of those empty calories??? ...it's just not worth it!) but I wanted to calm the nerves down a bit.

In the end, we (I for sure!) had a lot of fun and I'm positive we'll go again! We have to wait a bit till I get back from T.O. I'm lookin foward to it...next time: more Diggers, some Springsteen, some Blue Rodeo, and maybe even some Stompin Tom! It will most certainly be a blast!

Well, must go check the laundry...sigh. Next post I'm sure I'll be whinning about my trip...no where to hide....family-time overload! ....tehe!

Take care
~T

The Future of Computing: Web-Based Operating System?

I've been saying for quite some time now, that the future of computing...specifically the operating system (OS) as we know it will dramatically change and exist solely on the web. High speed connections will be ubiquitous, there will be no need for traditional, standalone OSs....well, traditional in the sense of those we have become to know now (Mac OSX, Windows XP, and dare I say Linux (eww..ASIDE: sorry, to this date I've never had any type of good user experience using a linux environment yet...they simply are not as usable, user friendly, etc...in my experience as the more popular OSs....Windows XP and Mac OSX...the old adage that "you pay for what you get" is all that comes to mind here. Although I like the idea of linux, and open source, changes have to made if open source software is to be adopted by the general populous...well, enough about this as I could discuss my viewpoint on this for a whole post in and of itself)) .....anyway...yes, future of computing, specifically the OS...yes....everything will be done via the web. It may be that perhaps you will still need local storage devices such as hard disks, ram, and devices such as CD/DVDs yadda-yadda and I'm even sure, perhaps not within my lifetime, that all of these will be replaced by some other form of media as well, I believe that in the future, there will be no need for "traditional" OS environments....

Enter "You OS", an online "OS" environment. I read about You OS in a recent slashdot article (Click here). Although, playing around with the demo You OS seems like simply a desktop environment replacement and currently too minimal to eradicate the OSs we have grown to "love" (Mac OSX, Windows XP, etc.....), it is a brief glimpse, in my mind, of what we can expect in the future of the computing world.

Is this a possibility, I certainly believe so. Obviously the concept of this mentality is in its early stages, i.e. how do we compete with bandwidth limitations, security, gaming issues, etc., but I do believe that these types of applications are what we can expect to see in the future. Interesting, yes....exciting, yes.....very cool! Although I have recently become quite attached to the Mac OSX desktop environment, I do foresee web-based applications (OSs) such as these, radically changing the computing landscape as we know it today in the near...ok, perhaps extended future....

Wednesday Night Open Folk Jam at McNally's

Well, Jason and I have decided to bite the bullet and attempt to go and play a few songs during the open jam at McNally's Wednesday night! (*July 26th*) It will be the first time in almost 10 years that I (we) have played in public (Jason has played for friends and family during this 10 year span but it has also been a while since he too has played to the public)

It should prove to be interesting nonetheless, and fun, etc-etc too! We have been jamming now for quite some time and have a fairly decent repertoire going. We hope to have a CD compilation out soon of all of our favorite cover tunes. More on this later!

So, will we chicken out at the last minute or suck it up and play....I and J both say the later. We're going to try and head down a bit early...not sure exactly what time but I will post the time (*as an update to this post*) what we decide (probably around 7:30/8:00 or so...)

Take care
~T

Mentos and Diet Coke?

Interesting! What started off being a good idea, ended up in being a whole wackload of work....

The story begins with bringing the king-size bed home. I was excited at first but when I first saw it and realized how big it actually was, well...I began to wonder if it would actually fit!

So, trying to fit it in my room:

- Monday: after finishing the ICHIT abstract, I moved my old bed out (queen size) and replaced it with the king and realized that I could no longer walk anywhere in my room. Solution, move my room around, doing some minor home renos in the process. Moved everything out of my room into temp storage. Attempted to remove an attached wall table and ended up making a BIG mess! Happiness-level = decreasing. Fixed the mess I made (drywall, drywall patching). Had to cancel golf Tuesday morning (sigh). Happiness-level = decreasing....bottomed out :-(

- Tuesday: after work, mentally drained...discussed paint, colours, how much, and went out to buy 3 gallons...sleeping on a really crappy old bed....my pooooor back!

- Wednesday: after work, sanded the drywall (with the help of my dad...yay!) and put on first partial coat of paint...partial because I selected 2 different colours (why not, I said...pretending to have some sense of style ;-) and needed to let one of the colours dry first. It was too late to apply the first coat of the second colour.....it did go pretty smoothly but my happiness-level = decreasing (why, didn't I just keep my old bed??), back (due to sleeping on the same crappy bed) = ouch!!!

- Thursday (today): Had to cancel playing the geetar with J. After work, with the help of my Dad put on second coat of one colour, first coat of the other. Just finished (9:45 or so).....sigh..not looking foward to sleeping again, waking up with wondorous back pains...

- Friday: put on last coat of paint....done...not quite...but happiness-level surely will be increasing (hopefully) ;-)

- Saturday/Sunday: move everything back

Sigh...so was it worth it, getting a nice big comfortable cheap king bed....?? ...probably YES, but man, what started off as something sounding so simple....

Oh well...just thought I would share some of my weirdo week...
~T

Nerds - like me, but way-way more so!
